Introduction to Ielts Speaking




English language is universal. It is being used in all the forms of trade, education and finance around the world. Studying English language makes a country more globally and competitive. It keeps us aware by latest trends and development worldwide.

I am going to talk about Ielts Speaking module. Generally, when an Ielts student thinks about Speaking module, some common but important questions come to his mind. Some of these questions are...

 WHAT IS IELTS SPEAKING?

Ielts Speaking is one of the four modules of Ielts. In this test, candidates have to discuss with an official examiner. This module lasts for 10 to 15 minutes. Questioner asks some questions about daily-life events. In brief, it is a face-to-face interview type exam. Ielts Speaking module consists of three tasks.

1.   Speaking Task 01:

 In Task 01, the examiner asks some questions about yourself, your hobbies, your likes and dislikes, inclination, your academic background, your city and your future plans. Task 01 takes 3 to 5 minutes. Some frequent questions that are asked by examiner in task 01 are here below;
o    Could you show your identification please?
o    What is your good name?
o    How would you spell your name please?
o    How can I call you?
o    What is the meaning of your name?
o    How does your name suit your personality?
o    Give me your complete introduction?
o    How do you get your job?
o    Are you satisfied with your job?
o    Are you a student or do you have any job?
o    What kind of books/newspapers do you read?
o    Where do you see yourself in upcoming 10 years?
o    Describe your study habits?
o    What do you do for fun?
o    Do you listen to music?
o    What do you do for living?
o    What is your favorite color?
o    What is your favorite T.V program?
o    What is your favorite country?
o    What do you want to be?
o    Hoe many rooms are there in your house?
o    How for long have you been studying English?
o    What sorts of work in your country are considered best?

o    Where do you live?
o    Can you tell me something about your hometown?
o    Tell me some famous landscapes in your hometown?
o    What are the main crops of your area?
o    What is the difference between your hometown and other countries?
o    If you are given a chance to make one change in your town, what will you do?
o    Which country would you prefer to live in?
o    Describe the history of your town?

o    What do you usually do in your free time?

Questions about Future Plans;
o    Why are you taking Ielts?
o    What will you do after graduation?
o    What will you do in Australia?
o    When will you marry?
o    What sort of business will you do after completing education? 

2.   Speaking Task 02;

In this task, the candidate is given a cue card about a decided topic by examiner. The task 02 takes 2 minutes. Examiner gives a selected topic to candidate and gives him a minute to prepare what he is going to speak. In this one minute span, the candidate can also make some notes for assistance if he desires. After this one minute of preparation, examiner asks to start speaking. As a candidate has to speak for 1 to 2 minutes, so if anyone exceeds by 2 minutes, than examiner requests him to stop speaking. If anyone speaks just for 1 minute or some seconds and stops, the examiner asks the follow-up question that are also attached with the cue card. For instance, If the cue card is "Describe an interesting hobby that you enjoy." than your follow-up questions may "How you became interested in it? How long you have been doing it? Why you enjoy it and explain what benefits you get from this interest?”  The examiner asks the follow-up questions just in case of less than 2 minutes speaking. Here are some samples of cue card that are frequently asked by examiner:
o    Describe a person who suggested a clever solution to problem.
o    Describe a moment when you came across any wild animal.
o    Describe good news which you heard from your friend.
o    Describe any major problem of your country/city.
o    Talk about a happily married family.
o    Speak about your favorite T.V program that you have been watching in childhood.
o    Describe an item that you bought recently.

3.   Speaking Task 03:

Speaking task 03 is the name of having some detailed and analytical discussions with the interviewer. This task comprises on task 02 related questions that you have to discuss in detail. Somehow, this task is also relates with task 01 because it is a question based session. The task 03 takes minimum five minutes.
For Example, if your cue card was "Describe an interesting hobby that you enjoy." than your task three questions will may;
o    Do you think having an interest is good for people? In what way?
o    Are there any negative effects of a person spending too much time on his hobby? What are they?
o    Why do you think people need/not need to have interests?
o    In your country, how much time do people spend on work and how much for leisure?
o    Do you think this balance is good? How the hobbies have been changing in the past fifty years to now?
o    In future, do you think people will have more or less time for their hobbies? Why do you think so? 

How to get 7+ Bands in Ielts Speaking;

In task 01, your answer must be at least 15 seconds long.
In task 02, must utter on given cue card for 90 seconds.
In task 03, your answer should be of at least 30 seconds.
  1. Share your thoughts confidently. Don't hesitate in-front of examiner because if you will shy, you could not speak your language no matter how much you have well prepared and perfect.
  2. Relish your gossips with the examiner. While talking with the examiner, just think that you are talking with your brother or friend.
  3. One thing you should remember that your ideas and knowledge is not important and are not being tested. The examiner only checks your speaking skills. So, if you give any erroneous information or tell him any lie, it will not create any harm impact on your bands.
  4. Always try to speak about such thing which were/are really exists in your life. Because, if you would lie or create any story in your mind at the time of interview, than your mind will have to do two tasks at the same time; The first is to think about what you should tell and the second is to converting, converting from your mother language to English. Therefore always try to speak reality.
  5. Clarify your simple ideas using perfect English. This will give you 9 bands.
  6. Think about any past experience that is related to the topic. For example, if the topic is a historic building, think about the historic sites that you have been and speak about that.
  7. Speak more and more about topic which you are given whether it is true or lie. Just think that it is your last discussion and this is a "do or die" situation for you. Speak, speak and speak until you either run out of ideas or start repeating. It is not good thing to stop before the given time. It is geed if the examiner interrupts you.
  8. Use idiomatic vocabulary in your speaking. The examiner always searching for natural language evidence so this is the best way to impress the examiner.
  9. Paraphrase the question. This is very impressive technique to impress the examiner. Paraphrasing means to devastate the same meaning in different words.
  10. Use linking words and phrases to bridge your ideas. Linking words are used to combine the ideas. In other words, if, and, on the other hands are some of the words. One important thing is that, don’t use a same linking word in every place and try to change or replace with other.
  11. Don't be nerves and afraid. Always remember that examiner is very friendly and well-wisher. So, If you become nerves or afraid, ask the examiner to give some time to overcome that situation. He will give you happily. It often has happened that the examiner himself felt the candidate is not in good situation and gave time to relax.
  12. Never give one word-answer. You must have ability to elaborate things. For example, if the examiner question that "Do you play cricket?" and you answer “No, I don't play cricket". This type of answer has no value in Ielts Speaking. Always attach some solid reasons with your answer. Your answer should be like that "No I don't play cricket, actually I hate this game because in childhood, I and my elder brother, who was 2 years elder then me, we are playing Cricket with our friends. Suddenly a ball pitched on my brother's forehead and he died at the spot. From that time we hate Cricket”.
  13. The most shared problem among the students is that they forget the words while speaking. To beat this common problem, the candidate must know minimum three synonyms of the words. By learning the equivalent words, the candidate will never stop at the time of speaking.
  14. Don’t skip any question that is asked by examiner. If you don’t understand the question, you may ask the examiner for repetition.
  15. For the betterment of your accent, watch the recent Speaking tests that are available on YouTube, watch English movies, talk to native English speaking partner, learn to BBC Radio, read English novels and newspapers and practice English with your friend or family.

In this post, I will share with you the much personal knowledge that how to solve each one, in detail. Type 01. Agree or Disagree, Favor or Oppose? This type of task is very familiar  in Ielts and is being asked quite often . For example, "Many people say that modern technology is better than old technology. Do you agree or disagree? or Imagine there is a plan to built a new restaurant in your community. Would you favour this plan or oppose it?". Your answer must be consist of four paragraphs. 1. The introduction is given in the first paragraph and most students do agree with the given question. It is very rare that someone goes against the question. Always start the first sentence with the key statement of the question and clearly agree or disagree with the question. Let suppose, if you
