Tips, Ideas And Hints For IELTS Writing Task 2 "How To Get High Score In Writing".

There are about 3 types of essay that is given in IELTS exams. In this post, I will share with you the much personal knowledge that how to solve each one, in detail.

Type 01. Agree or Disagree, Favor or Oppose?

This type of task is very familiar in Ielts and is being asked quite often. For example, "Many people say that modern technology is better than old technology. Do you agree or disagree? or Imagine there is a plan to built a new restaurant in your community. Would you favour this plan or oppose it?". Your answer must be consist of four paragraphs.

1. The introduction is given in the first paragraph and most students do agree with the given question. It is very rare that someone goes against the question. Always start the first sentence with the key statement of the question and clearly agree or disagree with the question. Let suppose, if you do agree, introduce the paragraph in its favour. Write 4 to 5 sentences in this paragraph.

2. In the second paragraph, write 7 to 9 sentences and give 1 or 2 examples. Do agree or disagree by giving detailed arguments. State its merits, advantages and reasons in detail of which you are going to agree.

3. Discuss the opposite side of the question. If it has any property then must express it but provide its demerits with full reasons and arguments and an example if for what reasons you agree/disagree with the statement.

4. This is the concluding paragraph in which give your final opinion and once again, you do agree/disagree with the statement.
5. If you are favouring anything, then keep favouring till the end. If you are opposing anything then keep opposing till the end.

Type 02. Discuss views & Give opinion/ Compare & Contrast/ Problem & Solution?

Example of that question is "Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both views and give your opinion".
Write four paragraphs in answer, however, this type of task is somehow different from "agree and disagree" task. You should discuss both sides, there pros and cons with examples. First paragraph is of introduction, discuss both sides in the second and third paragraph and in last one, opine your's and conclude.
In the Problem and Solution question, first and last paragraphs will remain the same. In the second paragraph, discuss the problem and in the third one, give some handsome solutions.

Type 03. One statement with 2-3 questions?

In this type of task, you are given a statement with two to three following questions, however, such tasks are proven arduous from other types. For example, "News editor decide what to broadcast on television and and what to print in newspapers. What factors do you think to influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if the more good news was reported?".

In this sort of task, the number of the paragraph depends on the number of questions ie; if there are there questions then paragraphs will be five, first one is of introduction and last is for a conclusion. In the midst paragraphs, you have to discuss all the asked questions.

How To Write An Essay:

There are five main steps.

Read the question:

Read the question. Decide what type of question it is - opinion, compare/contrast, problem/solution, cause/effect, or a mixture. This will decide the physical arrangement and your ideas.

Underlining:

Underline key glossary in the provided question and think its synonyms. This will obviously, save a lot of time for you later on. It will also help to avoid repetition and will illustrate that you have understood the question.

Get Ideas:

Decide if you are for or against the idea. Usually, it will be best to provide both sides (for and against - a paragraph each) and then, give your opinion in the conclusion. However, there are other ways to arrange your essay.

Decide Layout:

You should decide on a layout. The effective is 3773. That means four paragraphs: 3 sentences introduction, first body paragraph of7 sentences, second body paragraph of 7 sentences and the conclusion is of 3 sentences. This will take you in 20 sentences, an average of about 12 words each. Superb!

Check & Balance:

After writing your essay, swiftly go through the passage and find mistakes (grammatical and spellings, fragments run-ons and comma splices). Do not use contractions like I'm, he's, we're etc. This will decrease your points.
